Channel Islands residents struggle with aftermath of Storm Goretti

(MENAFN) Residents across the Channel Islands are still coping with the aftermath of Storm Goretti, which struck late Thursday with winds reaching 95 mph (154 km/h). The storm caused widespread damage, leaving communities to deal with fallen trees, power outages, and structural issues.

Jersey Electricity reported that around 400 customers lost power due to 80 separate faults.

Crews worked through the weekend and expected full restoration by Saturday. Meanwhile, Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service responded to 50 incidents during the storm’s peak, evacuating 48 residents to safety.

The damage was extensive, with about 100 trees brought down in Guernsey and more than 80 in Jersey. Jersey’s Infrastructure and Environment department said 47 incidents remained unresolved and advised the public to avoid wooded areas. Howard Davis Park remains closed after five large trees were toppled, posing risks to visitors. Officials also warned drivers to travel cautiously, as debris clearance will continue for several weeks.

Most emergency calls involved fallen trees damaging homes, vehicles, and roads, along with structural damage and triggered fire alarms. A spokesperson for Guernsey’s fire service thanked local agencies for their support and praised residents for following safety guidance during the crisis.

The Lihou Charity LBG also appealed for assistance after its retreat house on Lihou Island sustained heavy damage. Roof tiles were torn away, dormers were broken, and water seeped inside, leaving the property in urgent need of repairs.

Storm Goretti’s impact highlights the vulnerability of the islands to extreme weather, with recovery efforts expected to continue well into the coming weeks.
